There are several citation styles which professors may elect to have their students follow. Professors may choose citation styles such as Kate Turabian’s Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses and Dissertations, the Chicago Manual of Style, the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association or the CBE Manual for Authors.

Purdue Owl has excellent online guides to APA, MLA and Chicago style formatting to try on your own.
Many databases have a citation helper in the tool bar at the top or somewhere along the side, usually labelled "Citation" or "Cite". You will still have to check for proper formatting, but it can be a very helpful time saver when citing or saving specific articles. Many of them also have an "Export" function which will deliver your citation directly to RefWorks.
