So what type of articles should you be looking for?

Here are some clues about how to evaluate your results.

1. When was it published

How timely or dated is the information?

2. Authority

Who is the publisher?
Who is the author or editor?
What do you know about them?

3. What is the scope of the material

What kind of information does it cover?

4. Accuracy

Can you verify the information?

5. Audience

Who is the information intended for?

Humanities Databases

You can use these databases on campus or off. If you are off-campus, you will be asked for a username and password. Use your umassd email username and password.

Communication Source (EBSCO)
The database offers abstracts, citations, and full-text articles from scholarly and trade journals pertaining to communication, linguistics, rhetoric and discourse, speech-language pathology, media studies, and related fields.
MLA International Bibliography (EBSCO)
This database by the Modern Language Association (MLA) allows you to search citations, abstracts, and some full-text of scholarly journal articles, book chapters, and dissertations related to literature, language and linguistics, rhetoric, and the teaching of these subjects.
Arts & Humanities Database (ProQuest)
This database collects citations, abstracts, and many full-text articles from scholarly and trade journals and magazines in all areas of the arts and humanities including art, design, archaeology, classics, architecture, interior design, urban planning, history, philosophy, religion, music, literature, and more.
Humanities Full Text (EBSCO)
This database includes citations, abstracts, and some full-text of scholarly journal articles, magazine articles, and more. It covers subjects in the humanities such as art, literature, classical studies, film, journalism, philosophy, and religion.
Project MUSE
This database allows you to search the citations, abstracts, and some full-text of scholarly, peer-reviewed journals in the humanities and social sciences.
JSTOR
Search this full-text online collection of scholarly journal articles and ebooks on all subjects. JSTOR stands for "journal storage," so many journals date back to their first issue but may not have the most recent issues available. To find citations for articles unavailable to us in our subscription, just use advanced search and under "Select an access type" choose "All Content."

Search for Background Information: Reference Books, Encyclopedias, Newspaper Articles, and Reports

Britannica Library Reference Center
The electronic version of the encyclopedia, Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, and more reference resources to start a research project.
CQ Researcher
This resource is a collection of full-text reports on controversial issues of current significance. The reports offer topic overviews and background information, opposing viewpoint essays, and much more.
Academic OneFile (Gale)
A general resource containing citations and full-text article from newspapers, magazines, scholarly journals, and more on a wide range of topics.
