Thinktanks

Non-profits and think tanks are run by experts and scholarly in their fields. The ones linked below explicitly say they are non-profit and nonpartisan. Keep an eye out for those two words as you research, both are important!

ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union)
The ACLU's mission is to "realize this promise of the United States Constitution for all and expand the reach of its guarantees."
Brennan Center for Justice
The Brennan Center for Justice is a nonpartisan law and policy institute.

EJI (Equal Justice Initiative)
"The Equal Justice Initiative is committed to ending mass incarceration and excessive punishment in the United States, to challenging racial and economic injustice, and to protecting basic human rights for the most vulnerable people in American society."
The Marshall Project
The Marshall project is a "nonpartisan, nonprofit news organization that seeks to create and sustain a sense of national urgency about the U.S. criminal justice system."
Prison Policy Initiative
The PPI is a non-profit, non-partisan organization that "conducts research to expose the broader harm of mass criminalization," and creates advocacy campaigns to "create a more just society."
The Sentencing Project
"The Sentencing Project works for a fair and effective U.S. criminal justice system by producing groundbreaking research to promote reforms in sentencing policy, address unjust racial disparities and practices, and to advocate for alternatives to incarceration."
SPLC (Southern Poverty Law Center)
"The SPLC is a catalyst for racial justice in the South and beyond, working in partnership with communities to dismantle white supremacy, strengthen intersectional movements, and advance the human rights of all people."
Urban Institute Justice Policy Center
The Urban Institute Justice Policy Center provides unbiased research and analysis to "form solutions to crime and safety challenges in the interests of promoting effectiveness in justice systems and operations; addressing the harms of victimization and justice system involvement; reducing racial and other inequities; strengthening community-led approaches to safety; and promoting justice, dignity, and well-being for all."
Vera Institute for Justice
The Vera Institute's mission is "to urgently build and improve justice systems that ensure fairness, promote safety, and strengthen communities."
