Gender equality is fundamental to the achievement of human rights and is an aspiration that benefits all of society, including girls and women. The universal advantages of gender equality have been well-documented, and several international frameworks have affirmed its centrality to human rights and sustainable development.

The GII measures gender inequalities in three important aspects of human development—reproductive health; political empowerment; and economic status. The GII sheds new light on the position of women in over 150 countries and yields insights in gender gaps in major areas of human development.

The General Assembly of the United Nations adopted and proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948.
