It's important to cite AI for the same reasons that we give attribution for more traditional sources like books and articles:
There are unique implications to using AI so citing and documenting your AI process gives further insight to the reader about how your work was compiled and how they should approach your findings and the information you have presented.
The use of Generative Artificial Intelligence tools such as ChatGPT to organize and find information, write text, edit text, manipulate data, and generate images and ideas is increasing. Students and researchers should give attribution any time they employ Artificial Intelligence (AI) to create a scholarly work or complete an academic assignment, but most reference styles have not yet published guidelines for citing AI.
This guide provides resources, links, and examples to help you to cite AI tools. Students should not use AI in their assignments unless their instructors give express permission, and if there is doubt, students should explicitly ask their instructor. Researchers should check the submission guidelines regarding AI-generated content for any publications with which they would like to publish.
