Library Services Spring 2021: Archives & Special Collections

Archives and Special Collections Access Fall 2020

Please contact us! The Archives and Special Collections, including the Ferreira-Mendes Portuguese-American Archives continue to provide support for research and coursework during the Spring 2021 semester.  Please consider:

  • Service priority will be given to members of the UMass Dartmouth community.
  • If possible, inquiries will be handled without the necessity of an in-person visit, referring patrons to online platforms, such as ArchivesSpace, Primo and the Digital Archives.
  • In person visits, if necessary, are by appointment only, scheduled with one of the Archives Librarians.
  • For in-person visits, please be specific about collections to access, so that staff can retrieve them from storage in advance.
  • Please note that there may be limitations on what can be requested in a single visit.
  • For collection guides listing specific folders and boxes, see our ArchivesSpace finding aid database at https://archivesspace.lib.umassd.edu/
  • All visitors to the Archives and to campus must wear a mask and maintain social distancing.
  • We ask that visitors to the Archives come alone if possible.
  • Access to Special Collections monographs and av material are by appointment only.  Note that these materials do not circulate and must be used in the reading room.
  • The Archives Librarians will determine, on a case-by-case basis, if it is appropriate to digitize materials on demand and email them to patrons.  Considerations include size and amount of materials requested, as well as the condition and fragility of the materials to be digitized.
  • Please note that under the circumstances, reference inquiries may take more time than normal to satisfy and depend upon the nature and accessibility of the archival materials involved.
  • Digital Archives collections are located at https://umassd.primo.exlibrisgroup.com/discovery/collectionDiscovery?vid=01MA_DM_INST:umassd_library
  • One-on-one reference and class Instruction will be provided remotely through email, chat and online platforms.
  • Advance notice is needed to provide class instruction and is limited to the UMass Dartmouth community.
  • In-person class visits to the Archives are suspended for the Spring 2021 semester.
  • If at all possible, original archival materials will be scanned and made accessible in digital form for class use through the library’s digital repository at https://umassd.primo.exlibrisgroup.com/discovery/collectionDiscovery?vid=01MA_DM_INST:umassd_library.  Advanced notice is required for scanning.
  • Internships in the Archives will be provided by prior arrangement with faculty and limited to UMass Dartmouth students.

I have a general question about the Archives & Special Collections.

I have a question about university and/or local history. Who do I contact?

Contact archivist Judy Farrar at jfarrar@umassd.edu. Collections and/or research interests she supports include university records, the Schooner Ernestina-Morrissey Archives, the Archives of the Center for Jewish Culture, the Franco American Historical Collection, the Howard T. Glasser Archives of Folk Music and Letter Arts, the Robert F. Kennedy Assassination Archives, the Congressman Barney Frank Archives, and the Brazilian American Cultural Institute Archives.

I have a question about the Ferreira-Mendes Portuguese-American Archives. Who do I contact?

For questions regarding the Ferreira-Mendes Portuguese-American Archives, or inquiries from faculty and students in the History, Portuguese or Foreign Language Departments, please contact library liaison and archivist Sonia Pacheco at spacheco@umassd.edu.

When can I expect a response from someone in Archives & Special Collections?

We will acknowledge emails within 24 hours if received Monday through Friday. How long it will take for us to address your inquiry will vary and will be based on the nature of the question. In some situations it may be possible to provide immediate answers; while in other situations, staff may not have access to the collections required to respond to your query. When possible, staff will consult collections for query purposes, or digitize items. Digital copies of resources will be sent by email or Dropbox link.

What online resources from Archives & Special Collections are available?
