If you are just starting your project and you don't know a lot about a subject, a book will help you become acquainted with the topic and give you more vocabulary to use when searching. Our library's new catalog interface can sometimes be challenging to use, so if you don't think you are finding everything that you expect, don't hesitate to ask for help - either through online chat, by phone at 508-999-8678 or in person at the Reference Desk in the 1st floor Library Learning Commons.
If you are looking for a specific book, search the Claire T. Carney Library catalogue by author or title or both. If you are looking by subject, type a word into the yellow search box and click on search. Remember to click on the "UMassD Collections Only" tab at the top. Your results list will include several formats that might be available. If the book listing says "Online Access" that means that we have the book in electronic format. If the listing says "Find in Library" that means it is a paper book available in the building. You may click on "Details" to learn more about it. The "Details" link will show you a list of subject headings for the book. The subject headings are clickable to find similar books on this topic. Once you have found a call number you may look for the book itself on the 5th floor of the Library.
If the location of the book is listed as "CLOSED STACKS" you will have to request it at the circulation desk by filling in a purple request form or request it online by signing in to your library account and requesting it. The book will be retrieved for you usually within a day.
If you identify a book we do not own, you may request it through interlibrary loan.
If you are doing advanced work and want to know what books have been published on your subject over time and all over the world, then you may search WorldCat - a listing that incorporates many, many library catalogs from all over the world into one. If you find books listed there that are not in the UMass Dartmouth collection, you may request them through interlibrary loan. Our staff will do their best to assist you.
