Scholarly Communication

This guide describes scholarly communication and scholarly support available at UMass Dartmouth.

What are Transformative Agreements?

Transformative agreements are a new model in the publishing world. They seek to shift the focus of the subscription costs that libraries and research entities already pay for journals and other publications from reading to publishing. Libraries have always paid for the ability of our public to read database and journal content. A transformative agreement contributes that payment toward the ability to publish instead and the content eventually becomes Open Access - making the read access free. It is designed to increase free access to important scientific and educational content while still funding the publishers.

These agreements have varying incentives and goals. They are sometimes referred to as "read and publish agreements" or "road to open" or similar.
