Scholarly Communication

This guide describes scholarly communication and scholarly support available at UMass Dartmouth.

Altmetrics

There are multiple factors that are considered relevant when it comes to calculating your impact factor. Altmetrics are "alternative metrics." Some assert the value of the number of overall downloads, views, bookmarks, etc. for determining overall impact. These alternative metrics are not standardized and are highly variable across different online platforms. Here are some examples of the data that altmetrics can take into account:

  • Publicity and mentions from news outlets
  • Exports to a citation manager like Zotero
  • Shares or likes on social media such as Twitter and Facebook
  • Views and downloads from a publisher website or repository
  • Ratings on websites like Amazon
  • Library Holdings--Worldcat (worldwide database of library collections)

Author Impact

Author-Level Impact Factor is a measurement that helps to convey the impact that a particular author has had on their field of research.
The H-index is the most well-known and widely used impact factor methodology. H-Index is a measure of the number of publications published (productivity), as well as how often they are cited.

h-index = the number of publications with a citation number greater than or equal to h.

For example, 15 publications cited 15 times or more, is an h-index of 15.

Find Your H Index and other metrics:

Google Scholar

Google Scholar provides the h index for authors who have created a profile.

Publish or Perish

Publish or Perish is a software program that retrieves and analyzes academic citations from Google Scholar and provides the h index among other metrics. Publish or Perish is handy for obtaining the h index for authors who do not have a Google Scholar profile.

Web of Science

Web of Science allows for generation of the h index for publications and citations from 1970 to current using the "Create Citation Report" Uses only those citations in the journals listed in Web of Science.
