Depending upon your legal issue, a number of advocacy groups may exist.  Advocacy groups sometimes collect surveys or statistics, compile reports and documentation, and/or disseminate press releases.  You may learn of an advocacy group, through news articles or other secondary sources on your topic.  Below are just a few examples of these types of organizations:
