Portuguese-American Genealogy

A guide on some resources for those interested in Portuguese-American genealogy.

Objectives

This guide lists resources to find your ancestors

This guide lists resources that may help you find information on your Portuguese ancestors.  Sources we suggest include vital statistic information on your American, Azorean, Madeiran and mainland Portugal ancestors.  The guide also provides tips for finding genealogical information in our searchable database of Portuguese-American newspapers.  In most cases, as with the newspapers, you need to be able to read Portuguese.  Although not a genealogical library, The Ferreira-Mendes Portuguese American Archives collections may be a rich resource for contextual information on your ancestor, especially in collections that document local clubs and organizations.
