Portuguese-American Genealogy

A guide on some resources for those interested in Portuguese-American genealogy.

Birth Information

Birth announcements published in Portuguese-language newspapers of the late 19th and early 20th century, do not list the name of the child that was born.

As a general rule they provide the name of the father in full and the gender of the child.  In later announcements, the mother’s name is listed as is the family’s address.

The following keywords should be used when searching:

  • nascimento; natividade; parto (to give birth)
  • ‘deu à luz’ (to bring to light)
  • mimoseou-o; presenteou (gifted)
